The events in Ukraine and Crimea's recent accession to Russia have clearly highlighted the existing conflict in global politics between the West and Russia. The post-Cold War system of international relations is going through a serious crisis, with the current situation unable to be solved through compromise and constructive debate.

This RD Brief analyzes five key reasons for that conflict, suggesting that each of these systemic problems can and must be solved to bring the situation under control and make the system of international relations more stable.
