Against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with the West, Russia is taking steps to accelerate its pivot to China. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing in May is just the latest indication that Moscow is now willing to push forward its ties with Asian partners, especially China. The risks of partnering with China are more than outweighed by the possible economic gains for Russia’s Far East.
